Fenton Tower, East Lothian

The 16th-century L-shaped tower of Fenton is located on the lower slopes of a rocky hill to the south-east of Kingston in East Lothian . The site was reputed to have been occupied since the 12th century, with the existing tower dating to the late 1500s.

In 1998 Fenton Tower Ltd embarked on a complete restoration programme of this Grade ‘A' Listed Building and Scheduled Ancient Monument . They commissioned CFA to undertake a building survey of the upstanding remains along with an evaluation and excavation of the site.

A general desk-based assessment along with an EDM survey and survey drawings were produced using rectified photography. Internal drawings were annotated to record features such as original plaster work and re-used masonry. A photographic record of the architectural detail, including original plaster work and ornate moulding was also undertaken.

The survey and analysis of the structure of Fenton Tower identified at least three phases in the development of the tower and revealed a sequence of construction, adaptation and abandonment. The archaeological survey produced an insight into its development that largely corroborated the limited historical evidence and provided a clear picture of the scale of construction.
