John Knox House

Between 2004 and 2005, CFA were contracted to undertake a standing building survey of the Grade A Listed John Knox House under the request of City of Edinburgh Archaeology Service (CECAS). The former Netherbow Arts Centre, which was built in the 1970s, was being redeveloped with an improved access. As a result of the removal of modern building material, the eastern gable of the 16th century building was exposed.

Wire-frame outline generated using rectified photography

The survey was confined to this east facing elevation and recorded any significant features that were associated with John Knox House and its neighbouring building.

The principal architectural features were identified and recorded using a Total Station. A comprehensive photographic record was also obtained and a wire-frame outline of the elevation was generated using rectified photography.

A full REDM survey was not possible from one station due to the nature of the building. This problem was overcome by moving station through the floor levels and plotting reference points both above and below a given floor level. This enabled a scaled photomontage of the elevation to be produced without compromising the accuracy of the results.
