Tim has worked as an excavator and supervisor on many archaeological projects in Britain, France and Eastern Europe since his graduation in 1986. He worked for the Museum of London’s Department for Urban Archaeology for eighteen months on a variety of deeply stratified Roman and medieval sites; in Kendal town centre on a complex medieval site; and supervised for York University during excavations to stabilise Kellington parish church, York.
Since joining CFA in January 1991 Tim has worked as a Field Officer and has both participated in and managed projects from initial desk-based research through to final publication and archiving. He has special responsibility for the management and direction of Geophysical Surveys and Urban Archaeology. He has presented lectures to local archaeological and historical societies.
Tim has undertaken numerous archaeological projects for CFA covering a broad spectrum of project types and a wide chronological range. He has carried out upland surveys in advance of forestry and windfarm developments, detailed topographical surveys of various archaeological monuments and has conducted geophysical survey of a number of sites in Scotland, England and Eastern Europe. His excavation experience is similarly varied and includes directing major sites such as a kerb cairn at Calanais, Isle of Lewis; the Iron Age settlement site at Annieston, Clydesdale; the complex late first millennium site at Bostadh beach, Isle of Lewis; and numerous urban evaluations in both Scotland and England. He has directed large scale trial trenching evaluations, including at the A90 Longforgan Interchange; the A1 at Innerwick, East Lothian; and on the North-West Ethylene Pipeline for Shell.
Tim’s main areas of interest are in Iron Age, Norse and medieval archaeology. He has a particular interest in the archaeology of the first millennium AD, especially changing burial customs and native / Scandinavian interaction. His recent excavations at Bostadh and Galson on the Isle of Lewis have provided opportunities further to explore these interests.
Tim has published several academic papers, articles in popular magazines, and has written over 60 technical reports for clients |
