CFA Archaeology Ltd is proud and excited to be celebrating our 25th anniversary this year! Growing out of an established unit within Edinburgh University’s Department of Archaeology (known then as the Centre for Field Archaeology), CFA was established as an independent limited company in 2000, with the new company’s name being a nod to its roots.

This first #TeamCFA that moved from the University to Musselburgh consisted of just nine people, with only one computer able to connect to the internet(!). At that time, it was important for the whole team to be flexible and able to fulfil many different roles - this meant that everyone did bits of consultancy, fieldwork, and even graphics. In 2010, CFA expanded its operations into England with the establishment of an office in Yorkshire. As the company has grown in size, our team has diversified to include consultancy, graphics and geomatics, post-excavation, building survey, geophysics, and, of course, a wide range of fieldwork services.
Over the last 25 years, CFA has grown to become one of the leading archaeological practices in the UK and the company is thriving, with new opportunities arising from large-scale infrastructure projects including HS2, projects relating to the renewable energy industry, and Joint Venture working through CONNECT Archaeology LLP with our partners AOC and IAC. #TeamCFA colleagues continue to work all over the UK, from Shetland to Cornwall and all points in between!
Throughout the next few weeks, we’ll be publishing highlights from the last quarter-century to celebrate our successes, including some of our publications, artefacts, and favourite sites. We would like to thank all of the staff, past and present, who have helped make CFA what we are today - we couldn’t have done it without you, and we are looking forward to seeing what comes in the next 25 years!
