Last week, two of CFA’s heritage consultants, Emma and Gina, attended The Setting of Heritage Assets, a specialist training course hosted by Oxford University.

The two-day course brought together heritage professionals from across the sector to explore the role that setting plays in understanding and appreciating heritage assets, such as scheduled monuments, listed buildings, and more. Discussions focussed on how the surroundings of a heritage asset contribute to its significance, and how changes to those settings can influence our understanding, interpretation, and remembrance of an asset and its place in the past as well as the present.

Through presentations, discussion sessions, and collaborative learning, participants examined current approaches to assessing setting and managing change within the historic environment. The course provided valuable insight into best practice within heritage consultancy and development planning.

Continuing professional development is an important part of CFA’s commitment to delivering high-quality heritage and planning advice. Training opportunities such as this ensure our team remains informed about current guidance, evolving methodologies, and industry best practice, enabling us to provide robust and up-to-date reporting for clients. This ongoing investment in professional knowledge also supports the positive management of change in project design and development within the wider heritage and construction industries.

We would like to thank the course tutors Dr Stephen Carter, Dr William Filmer-Sankey, Mr Ian Houlston, and Esther Robinson Wild for delivering such an engaging and insightful course.
